Details:Job DescriptionGeneral NotesThe Institute for Fusion
Studies experimental group conducts magnetic fusion research to
advance understanding of plasma transport and turbulence in
magnetically confined plasma. The group conducts experimental
programs on the tokamaks DIII-D and EAST and supports development
of diagnostics for ITER and for Compass-U. It leads the US effort
to develop the electron cyclotron emission diagnostic for
measurement of electron temperature in ITER. The group's principal
diagnostic expertise extends to electron cyclotron emission for
electron temperature, plasma spectroscopy, and electric probes for
electron density and temperature. plays a pivotal role in the
advancing of knowledge, nurturing the next generation of physicists

Description SummaryPerform experimental plasma physics and magnetic
fusion research. Focus on development of modern plasma diagnostics
that employ electron cyclotron emission for the study of relevant
tokamak plasma physics phenomena and comparison of contemporary
simulation with experimental data. Essential functions- Conduct
independent research within the specified area of specialty and
collaborate on the research of other members of the research team.
Work is conducted using data from C-Mod, DIII-D, EAST, tokamaks.
Conceive and develop diagnostic systems for conduct of experiments.
Abide by local safety and health regulations based upon type of
research and location of research. Develop critical experiments in
close cooperation with other members of the research team. Report
results in open literature, at meetings or conferences, and to
funding authorities.Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research as directed on issues related to
the ECE diagnostic for ITER and produce reports on the research,
Collaborate on the ITER related research of other members of the
research team as required. Abide by local safety and health
regulations based upon type of research and location of
research.
- Develop critical experiments in close cooperation with other
members of the research team. The experiments will feature
theory/experiment comparison and be responsive to designated
funding opportunities.
- Report results in refereed literature, at meetings and
conferences, and to funding authorities. Report results regularly
at seminars of the Institute for Fusion Studies
- Advise on other research of the group as needed and as
directed. Advise supervisors on critical research opportunities.
Participate in scientific meetings and seminars of the Institute
for Fusion Studies Required Qualifications: PhD in plasma physics,
or closely related field, with at least two years of experience in
conducting experiments on tokamaks. Has at least one first-author
publication in a professional physics journal. Possesses general
familiarity with recent experimental results in thermal transport
in tokamaks. Proven ability to conduct computerized analysis of
data and compare to standard equilibrium transport codes such as
TRANSP or One-Two. Proven ability to work with modern
instrumentation for electron cyclotron emission- radiometers,
michelson interferometers, variable filters, data acquisition
modules, timing modules. Must demonstrate knowledge of general
laboratory safety procedures and must be willing to comply with all
necessary safety programs and policies both at UT and at
collaboration sites. Applicant expected to be familiar with the
following computational tools- IDL or Matlab, LabView, Mathematica,
plasma simulation codes such as TRANSP, and MDSPlus
databasePreferred Qualifications: Experience in software
development for data acquisition and analysis. Experience in
experimental study of plasmas in tokamaks using electron cyclotron
emission.Salary$95,366.00Working ConditionsUniforms and/or personal
